Astana hosts Kokpar World Championship

The first World Kokpar Championship kicked off in Astana on August 21, 2017. Kokpar is a traditional Central Asian horse game, where two teams compete to fetch a goat carcass to their part of the playing field.

The 8-day Championship welcomes 300 competitors from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Russia, Hungary, the United States, China and Afghanistan.

The captain of the American cowboys from Wyoming, Creed Garnik, said it was an honor for them to participate for the first time in a kokpar tournament, EFE reports. “I think kokpar will be for us a common language: the language of friendship and love,” Garnik told reporters.

“Kazakh and American cultures are linked by the importance given to horses,” Garnik added.
