On May 20-21 Almaty will host The Spirit of Tengri music festival. It is one of the most popular and massive open-air music events in Kazakhstan. The main goal of the festival is to promote folklore music of various cultures in Kazakhstan. Bands from all over the world flock to Almaty to showcase their country’s culture and art of music.
This year, African music will be performed at The Spirit of Tengri for the first time. Two bands, Speed Caravan from Algeria and France and Sekou Kouyate from Guinea, will perform at the event.
Mehdi Haddab from Speed Caravan is an Arab lute virtuoso. Arab lute, or oud, is a string music instrument that resembles Kazakh dombry. Mehdi Haddab is known for his innovative music projects that combine EDM and rock music. As a musician, he aims to make traditional musical instruments sound relevant in the XXI century. Speed Caravan is the third project of Haddab. If you have a chance to listen to his music, you will hear some references to The Cure and The Chemical Brothers with the notes of the Algerian motives.
Sekou Kouyate from Guinea will present music of their region to the festival visitors. One of the distinguishing features of their music is a combination of blues, soul, funk and jazz performed on a Guinean music instrument called kora. A lot of people refer to Sekou Kouyate as a Jimi Hendrix of the African music.
